I'll be uploading a build of this game to dA shortly, but for now please go check it out on Ludum Dare. Vast is a game made by me and *JohnJensen in 72 hours! Wow! We had a lot of fun with it; and while it's not quite what we initially visions, I really think we turned our limitations into a really nice game package in the end.

I like the game, I would have prefered a little back story maybe? But it was really fluid, other wise solid 8/10!

well yeah the art style is completely different, i guess there's a lot of carry over with the minimap and "acre" style land plots (like zelda or animal crossing)

It reminded me a lot of an old game (I think it was called Zork?)

It'd be great if we could mouse over our items and see their glyphs and the map could have been more useful if it marked down people in it.

I made the "music" for the game, I'm giggling to myself that I made something too creepy to play at night XD thanks yo :D

Awesome animations and shit, interesting colours - I'm guessing even more for the future? Dude, I'm left with a square present thing and leaves thingy - Is there gonna be a story and instructions because it gets kinda confuses.

It was a fun experiment, and it definitely could evolve into something better (and less confusing :D) but we've decided to carry on with our other projects instead of working on this more :)

As for a story, it already has one (say what!) and as for instructions, the idea was that the game would teach itself to people a little better, but we just didnt get time to make that work :) small things like, being able to see the glyphs of objects in your trail, being able to see people who still need help on the minimap, stuff like that :D

The game as it stands is definitely a bit confusing, yeah XD

Very interesting game. I really like how you were able to communicate with the player through symbols and little explanation. It reminds me A TON of edmund mcmillan's aether (and that's a good thing)

OMG I've never heard of done before, but I seriously like it! It's practically my approach to everything! Diving in and just making things repeatedly and quickly is a lot funner than working on the one thing for long periods of time, but - and Vast is probably a good example of this - it yields totally different results.

I'd say using the done method for this had some positive results (trying new things) and some negative results (forgoing a lot of features the game would benefit from having)

Thanks for showing me that link :)

Heh, interesting. No guide or instructions. You let the player figure out what to do :P

How did you come up with the concept?

Why was the game done in 72 hours?

Takorii Featured By Owner Apr 30, 2013  Student Digital Artist
The game was made in 72 hours for the Ludum Dare game jam :)

The theme was 'minimalism' and my first idea was to make an RPG game where everybody talks in singular glyph phrases, an idea which carried over into the final game concept.

We wanted to make the game atmospheric, a little bit alien, perhaps a tiny bit unsettling but also exciting. Part of that was deciding not to have any guides or instructions, a decision which I think is getting mixed feedback from people! Some people like the idea of playing with the game until you work out what to do, others seem to get a bit frustrated that nothing is explained.

I think if we were given a bit more time we'd let the game teach itself to players a bit more intuitively - easing them into the glyph concept, and not dropping everything on them at once :D

Anyway, thanks for playing :)
